Overview

Class 5 - 25,000kgs or over

Completing our NZTA approved course will eliminate the learner licence period.

A Class 5 Licence allows you to drive a vehicle combination 25,000kg and over. Our course includes both a Class 5 Learners and a Class 5 Full licence - we manage the entire licencing process for you. The course fee includes theory training (unit standards 24809 and 17577), learner licence fees and a practical assessment.

If you do not have your 5L truck learners licence you must register for the three-day course.

Please note: The transmission of the truck cannot be confirmed due to the nature of our courses and truck availability. We recommend that if you are unfamiliar with a manual transmission you take advantage of an additional lesson prior to assessment. Please contact us to discuss this

Prerequisites

  • 18 years of age or over
  • Held a Class 4 full licence for three months if over 25 or six months if under 25.
  • Driver’s Medical certificate. This can be obtained from your Doctor.

I already hold Logbook and Fatigue unit 24089, what evidence do I need to provide to prove this?

Provided this was completed in the last 12 months, you will not need to sit this again. Just bring a copy of your certificate along with you on the first day of the course.

What do I need to do for my medical?

As part of your licence requirements, you will be required to produce a current driver’s medical certificate. These are available from your GP and need to be completed before your course starts.

How long is my driver’s medical certificate valid for?

A driver's medical expires 60 days from date of issue and is valid for 5 years once lodged with NZTA. If you have lodged a driver's medical within the last 5 years, you do not need to obtain another one. For example, if you have recently completed your Class 2 Licence, your medical certificate will still be current. You will be asked to provide evidence.

What do I need to bring with me during the course?

Your booking confirmation will provide specific details about your course and what you need to bring. For truck licences please bring the following:

  • Your current drivers licence
  • Proof of completion of Logbook and Fatigue unit 24089
  • A copy of your driver’s licence medical certificate

What sort of gear box do you use for your assessments?

Axiom Training completes truck licences at many venues across the country. Given the range of venues and licence classes competed the specifics of the truck used will vary.

What is the waiting periods between licences?

The waiting period depends on your age and the class of licence you are completing. The following provides a brief guideline:

Class 2 – Must be at least 18 and have held a full class 1 licence for 6 months

Class 4 – Must have held your class 2 licence for 6 months if under 25, 3 months if over 25

Class 5 – Must have held your class 4 licence for 6 months if under 25, 3 months if over 25

Can I use a medical certificate that was done on my work site?

Yes, as long as it has been provided by a registered GP.

Can I complete a practical truck driving assessment without completing any of the usual theory days?

No, you must complete the class of learner licence along with units 24089 and 17576.

Why do I need to re sit the Logbook and Fatigue unit standard if I wait longer than 1 year to complete my next truck endorsement?

This is an Axiom Training company requirement as we must have robust evidence of current knowledge of 24089.

How do I obtain my Class 4 Truck Learner License?

There is no test required for your Class 4 learner licence. Simply purchase this at any NZTA agency prior to your Class 4 course.

How do I transfer my overseas truck license to a New Zealand License?

This can be completed at any NZTA agency.
